PENDUKA - "Wake Up"

PENDUKA is based in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, at the beautiful surroundings of the Goreangabdam.

Penduka is a development organisation for women in Namibia. It is a non-profit making and non-governmental organisation working with women groups in Namibia. In the Oshiwambo and Otjiherero languages the word Penduka means "Wake Up!" urging women throughout the country to take charge of their lives.

There are currently 30 women and 3 men working in Windhoek PENDUKA, a number of who are disabled. In the workshop the products collected from the rural groups are finished to be exported or for selling in the craft shop. Windhoek PENDUKA runs also a restaurant/ tearoom, conference room, tourist accommodation and a traditional village. Even cultural tours can be booked with our Penduka Travel organisation. Close related to PENDUKA is the GRIP recycling project.
The women of Penduka receive training in modern equipment enable them to produce high quality products, such as table linen and bedroom furnishings in batik and embroidery, and other items of interior décor. All products are inspired by native motives, are hand-made and can be washed with care.

The production team welcomes visitors in their workshop where you can see how the various items in the craft shop are made. After browsing in the craft shop you can sit and gaze out over the water of the Goreangab Dam whilst enjoying a cup of coffee and a slice of cake.

EHANGANO is the small traditional village at PENDUKA. This village is representing the eight different cultural groups of Namibia. You will find huts from Herero, Damara, Nama, San, Ovambo, Himba, Kavango and Caprivi. The PENDUKA ladies are happy to show you around in the village.

The aim of PENDUKA is to help rural women from all over Namibia to create their own jobs by becoming aware of, and building on, skills and resources that they already have. Until now over 500 women, working in 16 different groups all over Namibia, have been trained in different needlework skills and are paid a fair rate for the items that they make. Priority is given to disabled women and women suffering TB/HIV. These groups are very underprivileged in Namibia, they need urgently attention.

As we take you home, we will introduce you to our family, which means some of the communities we support. It is important for you to know that your journey to Africa was not only to take the good memories away but mostly that your stay has had a positive impact on the local and the underprivileged. So, while staying in Windhoek, don't miss the opportunity to visit the PENDUKA project.
